Port Ludlow was founded by Pope & Talbot, Inc. in the 1870-‘s as one of the first logging and sawmill communities on the Puget Sound. The town and mill were maintained by Pope & Talbot until the mid 1900’s when the old sawmill as dismantled and most of the homes were loaded onto barges and transported across the Hood Canal to historic Port Gamble.
Plans for today’s Port Ludlow
were formalized in the 1960’s, again by Pope & Talbot, for what has become a vital, diverse and prosperous residential community of homesites, homes and a variety of condominiums, plus a championship 27 hole golf course, a 300 slip full service marina and The Resort at Port Ludlow.
A pioneer in its own right, Port Ludlow has been a model for other communities in the northwest, often copied but never surpassed. When others were struggling with septic tanks, Pope & Tablot was installing the first secondary sewage treatment plant on the Olympic Peninsula and all other utilities were placed underground. Provisions for a perpetual Design Review Committee comprised of property owners were formalized and put into practice thus controlling the continues beauty and livability of Port Ludlow. And Owners’ Association was formed enabling the owners to govern their own community to the greatest extent.
A Climate That’s Easy To Live With. In a part of the world that’s noted for its rainfall, Port Ludlow enjoys more sunshine than is typical to the Pacific Northwest, averaging only 27 inches annually. This is due, in part, to Port Ludlow’s location relative to the Olympic Mountains, which form a “rain shadow”; a natural obstacle to storms flowing inland from the Pacific Ocean. Air temperature is influenced by surrounding water temperatures that remain fairly constant year round, creating a gentle cooling during the summer days and a warming effect in the winter months.
An Active Community. The moderate climate, excellent and convenient medical and hospital facilities plus the wide range of social and recreational activities all contribute to make Port Ludlow a good choice for retirement living. There are men’s and ladies golf clubs (9 and 18 holers), bridge clubs, yacht club, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, potlucks, social clubs and many other activities available to those who wish to participate. For those don’t, there is peace and quite. Apart from the many on-site activities, cultural events in Seattle, Port Townsend and surrounding communities offer an exciting opportunity to keep abreast of and in touch with the fine arts. Grocery shopping, banks, doctors, dentists, hospitals and major shopping malls are all located conveniently near Port Ludlow. Fire service and medical aid car are available on site.
A Beach Club of Your Own. Property owners have special privileges at Port Ludlow such as automatic membership in the Owner’s Association which owns and maintains:
Community clubhouse (The Beach Club); Heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools; Saunas and Jacuzzi; Squash courts; Pickle ball courts; Tennis Courts; Park and children’s play ground; Over 1 mile of sandy beach; and acres of green belt.
Property owners also receive preferential annual rates at the golf course and for moorage at the marina. Owners also have the opportunity to serve on the different boards and committees that govern the community.
First Class Marina The Port Ludlow Marina is a modern 300 slip full service facility offering permanent and short term moorage for large and small craft alike. There is a complete line of gasoline and diesel fuels with electricity and water conveniently located at each slip. The Marina Store offers a limited supply of groceries, sundries, fishing gear, and boat maintenance products for the convenience of boaters. There is also a fish cleaning table, boat launch and a sewage pump station for boats with holding tanks. Property owners at Port Ludlow are offered preferential annual moorage rates.
